George Mason University Earth Week

The university is holding several events throughout the week for students and the general public including a film festival about sustainability. To read more about the events, visit their website.

Community Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration
Saturday, April 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Free document shredding, wildlife demonstrations, a litter cleanup, tree walk, and displays will take place at the annual event at the Fairfax County Government Center. To learn more, visit the county's event page.

Watershed Cleanup
There are several watershed clean-up days taking place on Saturday. The Friends of Accotink Creek is hosting two cleanups in the Fairfax area. To read details on where, visit their website.

Celebration/Cleanup at James Lee Community Center
The James Lee Community Center in Falls Church will hold a celebration on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Activities include a community cleanup of the center and its grounds; Earth Day crafts; seed plantings; sneaker recycling, and a reading of Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax." Roots & Shoots Earth Day Event
The Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly will host a free Roots & Shoots Earth Day event for kids ages five and older. The event is on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. Activities include planting, weeding, mulching, trash clean-up and crafts for kids.

Bring a Plant, Take a Plant

On Monday, April 23, the third annual Plant Swap will take place at the Hollin Hall Senior Center in Fort Hunt. Gardeners bring in houseplants and swap them for others. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. For more information, call 703-765-4573.

Recycling Old Electronics

On Sunday, April 29, residents can recycle old electronics at the I-66 transfer station. More information can be found online.

"Build Your Own Rain Barrel" Workshop

Learn how to build, install and maintain a rain barrel, and take one home. Officials say rainwater collection can help you save water for use in your yard, eliminate potential flooding in your basement and reduce stormwater management costs. Register for a class online.
