State Senator Chap Petersen, who represents the 34th district, will likely run for governor in 2013, the Washington Post reported Friday.
Ben Tribbett, who writes the Not Larry Sabato blog and has been connected to Petersen's campaign for over a decade, told the Post that the only reason Petersen would not run is if Senator Mark Warner decided to campaign for the seat.
If Petersen decided to run, his Republican opponent in the general election would be attorney general Ken Cuccinelli, or Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling.
The 34th district consists of parts of Centreville, Vienna, Oakton, Annandale, Burke, Fairfax Station and Fairfax City. Petersen won a landslide victory over his opponent, Gerarda Culipher, in the newly-configured district last November. He is serving his second term in the Senate and previously served two terms in the House of Delegates.
The Post has more information on Petersen's potential run.

Chap Petersen is one of Dick Saslaw's minions who put themselves and the Democrat party ahead of the citizens of Virginia, so no I do not trust him and I would not vote for him. In addition he supported a woman for the Board of Supervisors, Janet Oleszek, that even the Washington Post deemed to dumb to be elected. I learned last November that Petersen and his fellow democrats vote only on a capital "D"-not on issues and not on qualifications-like robots they punch the "D" with no thought to good government--simply with no thought. Of course, if Petersen were to follow the example of Tim Kaine, who did absolutely nothing in the 3 years he was called governor, then we could at least say he did no harm.

I liked Chap when he was a Fairfax City politician, and didn't believe those who said he just wanted to rapidly climb the political food chain. Appears I was wrong. I was disappointed that Chap followed the lead of Gerry Connolly in blaming Republicans for all that is wrong with their world rather than working together to address the real issues. His visibility this year has been more show than substance, and that's a shame.

I agree -- sadly Chap has changed a lot in the past few years. Two years ago, he worked with one of my son's friends on a bill to include a high school representative in discussions affecting education and sought bipartisan support for it. Back then he used to say there were many Republicans he could work with. Not anymore.
Anyone who buys totally into the party line of either one of the major parties is willfully blinding themselves to the faults each party has. There are issues each party supports that I agree with and there are others I cringe at. I vote in each election and most of the time I do a write-in candidate because career politicians are so dishonest and corrupt. In order to move up in the ranks they have to sell out on their ideals -- only the ones who are able to do that can get the party's support, and in return the party expects blind obedience to the party line.

A Governor who would vote Democrat party line marches people down hill to the far left into complete statism. These individuals who vote the modern Democrat line and ticket are such drones that they have a mental illness that prevents them from having consequential intelligence. They don't see that they are killing individual liberty and themselves. Those who march to the drum beat of death not individual liberty must be stopped. Wake up people!

That is rich...coming from the Party that never saw a uterus it didn't want to control. The modern Republican party has morphed from one concerned about individual liberty, to only being concerned about the lberty of corporate "persons" to get rich. Onerous control over women's health decisions, restricting access to medical treatments they don't like, restricting voting and free speech rights. If you ask me it is the Republican Party who is retreating into statism..

Mr. Petersen is one of the few remaining rays of hope within the Old Dominion's legislative body and I wish him well in a run against "The Cuch". Go for it, Chap.

I vote for the person, not for any particular party, but the Republican party has gone so far under the control of the right wing that it makes it difficult for me to vote for anyone but a Democrat. I especially refuse to vote for Cuccinelli, whose out-of-control frivolous lawsuits have made Virginia the laughingstock of the nation. And yes, I find it a complete contradiction that the party that professes to support individual rights over government has passed a law that forces women to have an ultrasound - at their own expense! The Republican candidates are all for individual rights - as long as it follows their religious and hard-line orthodox doctrines.

I'd vote for Chap because he cares about the environment. He voted against uranium mining in Va. Chap cares about senior citizens getting services and young people getting good educational opportunity in public schools. All republicans want to do when they get into office is renovate the governors mansion and enrich their corporate friends.

Statism is a disease that has infected both parties. Individual liberty doesn't come from the parties but are inalienable. We are born with it. Men controlling the behavior of other men is the immorality of our current state. The Democratic party is leading that path in men serving others or private citizens serving the state. Both parties have been over reaching its authority by not being shackled to the constitution of the United States.
All of you have no clue what liberty from government is.
Let's clarify for you leftists the truth, not what you were taught in liberal public schools. The constitution is the starting point left of it is statism and right of it is anarchy. Our constitution gave the greatest liberties to individuals from centralized government in the history of human existence. We are supposed to preserve it and not feed the State any power to decide for society how to behave but only to protect our rights from those who violate them.
Killing babies is not a right for anyone to decide. To say women have the right to do so is anti-freedom to live.
We need people who want government to leave the citizens alone. That will be a true civil society. The way it is today is clearly not a moral one. The Democrats believe in the State and most Republicans to as well. Those Tea Partiers are constitutionalists and can help us get back to freedom.

Chap is a truly gifted politician and an excellent campaigner - - one of the best I have ever seen in Fairfax county. That said, he was a lousy delegate and is a disappointing senator. I only hear from him when it is election time.

Chap Peterson can talk on and on about how things are not his fault, without saying anything of substance or offering a viable alternative.
In this he stands lockstep with Gerry Connolly and is little more than a Democratic Rubber Stamp who points at the GOP and cries wolf!

I would love to know what Governor McDonnell has down to help the Commonwealth? Please let his accomplishments since becoming Governor. I'm sure the list will be a blank sheet of paper. What about Wolf? List his accomplishments as well as a 32 year Congressman. If you want someone to explore your uterus or want higher tolls, then these are your guys. Worthless.

Chap would be a breath of fresh air, especially compared to the extremists who've taken over Richmond. Also, electing him would put state resources (particularly in transportation) back in Northern Virginia, where the tax revenue comes from.

Is constitutionalism extreme? What does extremists means? Less government or more government?
What is a liberals definition of freedom or extremism? Please sincerely explain.

I met Chap Peterson once when I was working as a court reporter and he was one of two attorneys deposing parties to a lawsuit. He is such a nice and personable and charming person. I don't know much about his politics, but on a human level, he struck as a really very nice person.

Chap is a class act and would be a very good Governor. We need a Governor for all the people not just the rich and those who are in the business community. We need elected officials who work for all the people instead of just some of the people.

The self-described "patriots" who have claimed the Republican Party are leading the country toward plutocracy. I was a Republican for 25 years but the party no longer represtents the American people. It represents the very wealthy and is supported by the ill-informed and self-serving. Although not a Democrat I'll vote for anyone who isn't a Republican - especially against our reactionary Virginia Attorney General. I also plan to contribute to Wayne Powell's campaign against Eric Cantor. The Republican Party claims to represent personal liberty but, in truth, is its greatest threat.

I totally agree! These are reasons I no longer vote Republican (and haven't for a number of years). The Republican party is all for personal liberty - as long as it is their particular brand of liberty. Those who disagree are considered targets for extinction by the far right wing extremists. They ignore the facts and rely on rhetoric and fear to garner votes. We don't need these kinds of people in power.
