Fairfax Station Veterans Event a Success; Clean-Up Planned
The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8469 is planning a clean-up Saturday.
Fairfax Station veterans packed 105 care packages for the troops this weekend, surpassing their initial goal of 50-60 parcels.
“To say it was a success is probably an understatement,” said John Houston, a member who served in the Army and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8469. “We had a huge turnout of non-veteran members of the community, and there was a lot of sharing of stories.”
Fresh off of Saturday’s event, the VFW post is conducting a clean-up of its headquarters this weekend. On Saturday, the post will conduct general upkeep that includes some painting, pulling weeds, and cleaning. The group has made the facility its headquarters for about 20 years and it needs periodic upkeep, Houston explained.
“Members of the post mostly will be there but we can always use volunteers,” he said. “Anyone who needs [school community] service hours is welcome to come and help.”
The event will be held Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at headquarters on 5703 Vogue Road in Fairfax Station behind the Gold’s Gym.

John & the Post are also trying to raise $2,000 to send power converters to the 273rd Military Police Company, a National Guard unit out of DC. Any donations should be sent direct to VFW Post 8469, with Power Converters in the memo line.
