It's Official: Turf Coming to Robinson
The money has been raised, and artificial turf will be installed.
The fundraising efforts of several groups have joined forces to provide Robinson Secondary School with artificial turf for two athletic fields.
Robinson’s Athletic Boosters raised $500,000 for the project, and the Braddock Road Youth Club contributed $400,000, according to Tom Lizardo of the Booster Club. "The total cost of the project including lights will be about $1.5 million," said Lizardo.
Additional funding is being provided as follows:
- $175,000 from the Fairfax County Synthetic Turf "Mini-Grant" Program
- $100,000 from Robinson Athletics
- $175,000 from the Northern Virginia Soccer League
The final $150,000 was secured as part of the Board of Supervisor's third quarter review process. "Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust identified some additional monies that could be spent to help turf projects at schools throughout the county, and Supervisor Cook ensured Robinson was one of those schools included," said Kiel Stone, chief of staff for Supervisor Cook.
A groundbreaking ceremony is being planned for early June. "We hope to have the synthetic turf completely installed prior to the first football game of the 2012-13 season," said Lizardo.
Lake Braddock Secondary School and Woodson High School are also in the process for raising funds for turf fields, according to Supervisor Cook.

This is great that Robinson gets the fields but disappointing that BRYC is a major donor as it will be painfully clear that they will control the use and leave little for any other organization.

With all the kids who dropout or are "pushed out" of Robinson due to the failure of the school to provide what the kids need to be successful in school, you'd think they'd find a better way to spend that money. Unfortunately, that school's leadership loves anything to do with sports leaving an significant gap in focusing on what should be a school's priority, which is educating all of our children. That's a much higher priority than buying fake grass which is harder to play on than real grass.
