Local Olympians Head to London

Claire Laubach, a field hockey player from Centreville is among the Olympians headed to London this month. Annandale's Giuseppe Lanzone has joined the U.S. Olympic Team and will compete in men’s rowing.

Testing Irregularies at Elementary School

Fairfax County Public Schools said Thursday a recent internal investigation revealed a "testing irregularity" in the way some Fort Belvoir Elementary School students took 2011-2012 Virginia Standards of Learning exams.

Task Force Recommends Equestrian Coordinator
The Fairfax County Ad Hoc Equestrian Task Force (ETF) proposed that officials appoint an equestrian coordinator to act as an ambassador between equestrians and the county and establish an Equestrian Advisory Committee. The ETF had been meeting for more than a year and presented their recommendation to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

Moon Voted New School Board Chair
The Fairfax County School Board was evenly divided and in a stalemate over who should be the next chair, until the current chair threw her support behind a third candidate.

911 Failure Investigations
Several Northern Virginia congressmen would like to see a post-Hurricane Katrina proposal revived: It calls for cell phone towers to be equipped with back-up generators. In addition, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Sharon Bulova and others on the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments is calling for an investigation into the failure of 911 services for several days in the wake of the June 29 derecho.

Fairfax City Fireworks Malfunction Unlike Dangerous 2007 Shows
Fairfax City's Fire Marshal said this year's fireworks problems were unrelated to the difficulties that injured 11 people in Northern Virginia in 2007. Families gathered at Fairfax High School to see the Schaefer Pyrotechnics fireworks display last week were disappointed when the show ended without a grand finale due to technical difficulties.

Looking Ahead: Weather in Fairfax Station
High temperatures in the low to mid-90s will return next week under mostly sunny skies.
