Online Fundraiser Set Up for Lorton Girl Burned in Fire
Seven-year old transported to burn unit in Boston.
An online fundraising page has been set up to offset costs associated with the recovery for burn victim Mary Cox, 7, of Lorton.
Mary, identified on the online fundraiser, was burned Sunday at her home in a gasoline fire.
The online fundraiser was set up for Mary by her aunt, identified online as Jennifer Phelan.
The girl sustained second and third-degree burns over more than 40 percent of her body, according to the Web site.
Mary was transported Sunday to Shriner's Hospital for Children in Boston. She is in a medically induced coma on a breathing machine and listed in critical condition, according to the site.
Any donations made will help offset the travel costs for her parents, Steve and Pamela, as well as out-of-pocket medical expenses, the site notes.

I have one comment. Shrine hospitals are supported by (in part, I believe) by part of the Shriner's dues to the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. My father was a Shriner and I know part of his dues were for the hospitals. The Shrine is part of the Masons. There are yearly fund raisers in general by the Ladies of the Shrine. I know, I was a member. If the patient cannot pay for their care, then the Shrine pays the total cost until the patient reaches adulthood. So - whoever is in charge fof this fund raiser, check with the local Shrine group. There is one in Fairfax (Kena Temple), Alexandria, Washington, DC(Almas Temple) and Maryland.

I know the family, I think they have everything going with Shriners Hospital to help them with thier medical needs, I will check though. Thank you!
They have to pay for all the costs of traveling back and forth to Boston and only having one parent working, so the other can stay with Mary at the hospital. They have three other children that are still in school that need cared for. And, they have to have a sterile enviroment for her to come home to when she gets out of the hospital.
They need all the help they can get. Prayers would also be greatly appreciated I am sure! I am not related to them but, I have known Mary's mom for a long time and she is a great person.
Thank you to everyone and Lorton Patch!

The fundraising page clearly states the funds will be used for travel costs and out-of-pocket medical costs. It is true there will likely be no out of pocket medical expenses associated with Mary's stay at Shriner's in Boston, when she returns she will have extensive care in the local area and there will definitely be out-of-pocket expenses associated with that. Just the travel costs to and from Boston every weekend for a period of 6-8 weeks is not a small undertaking, especially for a family of 6 with only one parent working.

I was just wondering if there was an update on Mary's condition. Both my children attend school with her and we think about her everyday. She and her entire family are in our thoughts and prayers. Get well soon Mary!
