In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, more than 1,000 South County High and middle school students formed a giant human pink ribbon in the school parking lot on Friday.

Faculty and staff recognized breast cancer awareness by wearing pink and posing for the camera with students. The camera was set on top of the Crosspoine Fire and Rescue Station's ladder truck. 

"Our human breast cancer ribbon, formed in celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was a way for us as a school to spread awareness of a disease that has impacted so many, and we are pleased that it was such a success," said Shawn Gardner, a South County English teacher and leader of Team Heather. 

Team Heather was started in memory Gardner’s sister, Heather Starcher, who died of breast cancer in 2002. The South County community has raised more than $55,000 for Team Heather, and the funds go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
