Peru Negro to Perform 'Festejo' at GMU Saturday

Thirty-member singing and dance troupe teams up with Eva Ayllon, 'Peru's Tina Turner'

Peru Negro, a 30-member dance and singing troupe representing the African American culture of Peru, comes to George Mason's Center for the Arts Concert Hall Saturday evening for a show that features Eva Ayllon, often described as Peru's answer to Tina Turner.

The program, which begins at 8 p.m., showcases the folkloric ancestry of the slaves who lived on the coast of the South American country. The actual word for this cultural experience is dubbed "Festejo."

George Mason promotes the program as "family friendly," and mentions that there is a pre-performance discussion. (These discussions usually begin one hour before the performance. In this case, member of the company will speak with the audience at 7 p.m.) Tickets are available at $46, $38 and $23. A limited number of student tickets are also available.
