The Burke Centre Conservancy hosted its rescheduled Burke Centre Festival Wine Garden on Friday on the Conservancy grounds. Usually the Saturday night feature of the Burke Centre Festival, the wine garden had been rained-out earlier in the month. Three Fox Vineyards of Delaplane, Va. provided the wine. After years-long hiatus, the once-annual CliftonKidFest returned to Clifton September 15. "The purpose of the festival is to bring together families of the greater Clifton area for food, fun and community," CBA Chairman Tom VanBlaricom said. "With the closing of Clifton Elementary School, venues like this help keep Clifton together as a community." The event, sponsored by the Clifton Betterment Association (CBA), was held in Clifton Town Park.
The local Out of the Darkness Walk is one of 275 in communities across the country. The September 2012 event featured: Informational displays by groups including CrisisLink and AFSP. Speakers including Springfield, Va., licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Amanda Warbel and Lorijane Graham, author of the "Hummingbird Project for Anyone Who Has Encountered Suicide". Remembrance Displays paying tribute to loved ones who died by suicide. An opportunity for survivors of suicide loss to offer each other reassurance and hope. Burke Centre Conservancy staff said the Wine Garden, cancelled Saturday evening due to the severe weather in the area, will be rescheduled later this month. The 35th annual Burke Centre Festival was cut short Saturday, due to the storm that passed through the area about 3:40 p.m., bringing heavy rains and strong winds. The festival continues Sunday, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Burke Centre Conservancy. Parking is available in business, church and school lots along Burke Centre Parkway. There are shuttle buses from 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts a mostly sunny day in the mid 70s. Come meet Burke Patch Editor Susan Larson at booth S6 on Sunday.

Custom Cruisers of Northern Virginia and the Clifton Lions Club held their 13th Annual Show “On the Streets” on Labor Day, raising funds to benefit two local charities — Life with Cancer and the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program. The event raised nearly $15,000, which will be evenly divided between the two charities, according to Jim Chesley, president of Custom Cruisers of Northern Virginia. The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office partnered with Target in Burke Wednesday to provide 24 children who are homeless with a back-to-school shopping spree. Now in its 19th year, Shop with a Sheriff pairs deputies and other Sheriff's Office staff with school-aged children temporarily residing at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax and the Patrick Henry Family Shelter in Falls Church. Fort Belvoir soldiers, Springfield-area business owners, local politicians, school groups and citizens marched across Veterans Bridge Tuesday evening for the 11th annual Springfield BridgeWalk. Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay organizes the event each year to affirm the support of the local community for those who serve in the military, especially those at Fort Belvoir and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency at Fort Belvoir North. Whole Foods Market in Springfield donated 5 percent of its proceeds Wednesday to the Friends of Hidden Pond Nature Center. The grocer partners with a selected non-profit organization once per quarter. "The 5% Day of Community Giving is one way Whole Foods Market gives back to the community," said Janelle Cesari, a marketing team leader. Hidden Pond will use the money for education supplies, new water sampling docks and workshop fees for children from low income families, according to the Fairfax County Park Foundation.
