A Lecture and a Walk to the Vermont Brigade Civil War Encampments and Fortifications at Wolf Run Shoals

It's happening later this month.

Howard Coffin, an author and authority on Vermonters during the Civil War, will be stopping in Clifton on April 19 to give a discussion on the Vermont soldiers who occupied Fairfax County during the first half of 1863.

The Vermonters were famed for repelling Pickett's charge at the battle of Gettysburg - a pivotal moment in the bloody war. The discussion will be held at 7:30pm at the Clifton Baptist Church, 7152 Main Street.

Coffin is the author of "Nine Months to Gettysburg" and "Full Duty: Vermont During the Civil War". He's a seventh generation Vermonter, and six of his ancestors served in the Civil War. He has given more than 300 lectures on the conflict.

The following day, April 20, will be spent at Wolf Run Shoals, where a group will take a walking tour of the fortifications and encampments. The cost to participate is $10 per person, and attendees are asked to wear comfortable shoes, bring bug spray and water. The group will meet at the end of Wolf Run Shoals Road at 1:00pm.

The discussion and tour are being presented by the Clifton Historical Preservation Committee and the Fairfax County Historical Society.
