Forecast Calls for Snow, Sharp Winds in Northern Virginia

Thursday didn't start out too bad, but forecasters are calling for a mean winter streak to hit Northern Virginia starting later in the evening.

The National Weather Service predicts an 80 percent chance of precipitation to fall Thursday night, with rain and snow becoming all snow after 2 a.m.

Expect a low of around 18 degrees. But watch out for that wind: Northeast winds are expected to increase to 15 to 25 mph after midnight, with gusts as high as 36 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Those biting winds are expected to continue into Friday. The windchill Friday morning could be as low as zero, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday should be sunny, but highs in the area are only forecast to be about 20 degrees.

Those high winds make it tricky to predict snow accumulation, according to the Capital Weather Gang. The greater Washington area, including northern Fairfax County could see 1 or 2 inches of accumulation, but snow is more likely to stick the further east or northeast you are.

The weekend should bring a little bit of sun, but Monday night's low is expected to be around 11 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Tuesday is forecast to have a high near 20 and a low around 10.
