Clifton's Fred Asnick Nominated for Volunteer Service Award

He was nominated by the Clifton Betterment Association.

Fred Ansick of Clifton was among the nearly 200 candidates for the 2013 Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards organized by Volunteer Fairfax.

Ansick is the seven-time chair of Clifton Day, an annual festival and fundraiser that attracts around 25,000 people. Held the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, Clifton Day features an array of antique dealers, artists, bakers and other street venders who line the town’s streets for several blocks. Live music, barbecues, horseback rides, craft demonstrations, children’s activities and other special events add to the fun.

“I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition than Fred,” said Michelle Stein, president of the Clifton Betterment Association (CBA), which nominated Ansick for the award. “Each year, his leadership and dedication produce an event that provides enjoyment to thousands of Fairfax County families as well as funding for The Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Clifton Lions Club and numerous other local organizations.”

A native of Pennsylvania, Ansick previously lived in San Jose, California while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He and his family moved to Clifton in 1997. His involvement with Clifton Day began in 2000, when he responded to a request to help manage parking for the event. Over time, his role expanded and he joined the planning committee. In 2006, he took over as its chair.

Clifton Day’s size and complexity requires the planning process to start several months in advance. During that period, Ansick and the other planning committee members devote many hours each week to an endless list of logistics that includes setting up exhibit space, redirecting traffic flow, communicating with local merchants and arranging parking for several thousand cars.
