Crosspointe Animal Hospital Says Lost Feral Cat No Longer In Building

"As both the contractor and feral cat handler said, it is very unlikely that he is still in the ceiling."

Mittens, the four-year-old feral cat that got lost in the attic of Fairfax Station's Crosspointe Animal Hospital, is still missing, and on Tuesday, the animal hospital provided a detailed account of what staff have been doing find him.

"Crosspointe Animal Hospital has been trying desperately to find Mittens, seeking advice from any and all feral cat experts they can find," ," wrote a representative of Crosspointe Animal Hospital on Fairfax Station Patch's Facebook page

John Monrreal brought Mittens into the hospital for his rabies vaccine on July 19, 2013. At some point Mittens got spooked, jumped from the examining table onto a light fixture, cabinets and into the rafters of the building.

"We're pretty much resigned to the fact that Mittens is not alive anymore," he told Patch. "But there was some activity on Thursday when they found fresh urine on some of the tiles in the ceiling area."

A building contractor went into the rafters and saw Mittens last week, but was unable to catch him. The contractor said there is the chance Mittens escaped by pushing through a small opening of medal siding in the roof.

Crosspointe documented the following week closely:

  • Multiple traps, food and water were left in the ceiling and floor of different areas of the hospital
  • Fairfax County Animal Control visited the hospital twice
  • Fairfax County firefighters used a heat sensor device to no avail
  • Two feral cat handlers visited the hospital and came up empty handed
"Crosspointe Animal Hospital is very saddened by this situation and hopes that someone, at some point, finds Mittens," according to the Facebook post. "However, at this time, as both the contractor and feral cat handler said, it is very unlikely that he is still in the ceiling."
