High Winds Knocking Out Power in Fairfax County

National Weather Service warning says winds will continue into the evening hours

More than 13,000 homes in Fairfax County are without power this afternoon, likely due to high winds blowing limbs onto power lines. An outage map from Dominion Power shows some homes without power near Henderson Road.

George Washington Parkway was temporarily closed this afternoon, while motorists waited for fallen trees to be trimmed and moved off the roadway. The Capital Weather Gang reports gusts of 58 miles per hour at Dulles Airport. Reston saw a 67-mile per hour wind gust today, according to Channel 7.

A high wind warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Gusts can reach up to 60 miles per hour. If you haven't already, be sure to secure outdoor property. While driving, also be extra careful near intersections, where traffic signals may be out.

The National Weather Service issued the "High Wind Warning" for the Washington D.C. area, effective from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. today. Wind gusts of 58-plus miles per hour are expected. 

The area saw rain this morning and in the early afternoon.
