1. On this date in 1961, outgoing U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave a televised farewell address and warned the nation of the potential dangers of the American "military industrial complex."

2. On Jan. 17, 1945, Soviet forces capture the German city of Warsaw from the Nazis. The Germans retreat, and in the process also begin the evacuation of 60,000 Jews from the concentration camp at Auschwitz.

4. The weather today will be snowy with a high temperature of 38, according to the National Weather Service. Expect one-to-two inches of accumulation. The evening will be snowy with a low of around 28 degrees.
