Kiwanis Club Awards Thousands in Scholarships to Area Students

Four students will each receive $3,000 toward college.

Four area students will get a leg up toward paying for college in the fall, thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Fairfax.

The winners, who are members of Key Clubs - the high school level of Kiwanis clubs - were announced last week.

"All of this year’s applicants are all exemplary students, leaders and academicians," said Elizabeth Skelley, the Kiwanis Club's president-elect.

Skelley said, helping local students with the ever-increasing challenge of paying for college is a problem the club has eagerly taken on in the past several years.

This year's four scholarship winners, who are seniors in high schools throughout the area, will each receive $3,000, payable to the college or university of their choice.

Skelley said, this year's four winners were chosen not only for their academic accomplishments, but because they each have held several leadership roles within their respective Key Clubs, with many community service hours within and outside of Kiwanis.  They also have many other varied interests from athletics and science to music and debating, she said.

The winners come from four area schools that are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Fairfax.

"These students represent the best in demonstrated leadership roles within the Kiwanis family," Skelley said. "All these students, and their families, should be extremely proud of their accomplishments."

This year's winners are:

  • Nathan Chen – Oakton High School
  • Kevin Huo - Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology
  • Angela Lee - Robinson Secondary School
  • Esther Yoon - Centreville High School

The students and their families were treated to an awards dinner in Fairfax City on Tuesday, May 28.

The scholarship project, which is a joint effort between Kiwanis Club of Fairfax and the Friends of the Fairfax Library, is "an ongoing effort to promote excellence in leadership, community service and academics among the youth in our area," the members of the Club said.
