Weekend Planner: High School Sports, Live Theatre, and a Neighborhood Festival

Friday, Sept. 9th through Sunday, Sept. 11th

After a wet and rainy week, Patch knows that you’re ready to get out of the house and have some fun!  Here are our top picks for what to do in the local area this weekend:

Burke Centre Annual Festival

  • Where: Burke Centre Conservancy Festival Grounds, 6060 Burke Centre Pkwy, Burke
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 10th : 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Wine Garden on Saturday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11th : 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 9/11 Wreath Laying Ceremony at 10:30 a.m.
  • Why Go: Live music and entertainment, rides, arts and crafts, face painting, and festival foods – there is sure to be something for everyone at this year’s festival!
  • Price: Admission is free. Ride prices vary.

Varsity Football Home Games at Robinson SS, Annandale HS, and Falls Church HS

  • Where: Robinson Secondary School, 5035 Sideburn Rd, Fairfax; Annandale HS, 4700 Medford Dr., Annandale; Falls Church HS, 7521 Jaguar Trail, Falls Church
  • When: Friday, Sept. 9th.  All games begin at 7:30 p.m.
  • Why Go: Show your support for these local high school teams as they play on their home fields this Friday night.
  • Price: Admission varies.  Contact your local school for details.

Metropolitan Performing Arts Theatre presents: “30 Reasons Not to be in a Play”

  • Where: Lake Braddock Secondary School, 9200 Burke Lake Road, Burke
  • When: Friday, Sept. 9th and Saturday, Sept. 10th.  Curtain is at 8:00 p.m. on both nights.
  • Why Go: Enjoy an evening at the theatre while this local group of performers entertains with a comedy directed by Kathy Rehm.
  • Price: $10

50th Annual Model Soldier Show and Exhibition

  • Where: Northern Virginia Community College, Ernst Cultural Center, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Why Go: Admire the artistry and craftsmanship of hundreds of model soldiers on display.  There will also be vendors selling figures and figure kits, as well as military history books, videos and music.
  • Price: Adult admission is $7; kids 12 and under are FREE

Varsity Co-Ed Cross Country “Monroe Parker Invitational”

Local competing teams include: AHS, FCHS, TJHSST, LBSS, RSS, WSHS, and SCSS

  • Where: Burke Lake Park, 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station
  • When: Morning of Saturday, Sept. 10th (click on the school links for start time details)
  • Why Go: Local varsity boys and girls cross country teams will compete this Saturday morning at Burke Lake.  Get ready to cheer them on as they race to the finish line!
  • Price: FREE

Stars on Sunday presents: The United States Navy Band’s “Cruisers”

  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton
  • When: Sunday, Sept. 11th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Why Go: Enjoy a Sunday afternoon concert under the Performance Tent.  Music by the Cruisers ranges from jazz, rhythm and blues, classic rock and pop, as well as original material.
  • Price: FREE
