Fall is just around the corner, and Patch has found some great indoor and outdoor events for you to enjoy this weekend.
Varsity Field Hockey Home Games at Thomas Jefferson HS, South County Secondary School, and Robinson Secondary School
- Where: TJHSST, 6560 Braddock Road, Alexandria; SCSS, 8501 Silverbrook Road, Lorton; RSS, 5035 Sideburn Roadd, Fairfax
- When: Friday, September 16th. TJHSST and SCSS games begin at 7:30 p.m.; RSS game starts at 4:00 p.m.
- Why Go: Cheer for your local varsity field hockey teams this Friday as they play on their home fields.
- Price: Admission varies. Contact your local school for details.

- Where: GMU Center For the Arts, 4373 Mason Pond Drive, Fairfax
- When: Saturday, September 17th. Pre-performance lecture at 7:00 p.m.; performance begins at 8:00 p.m.
- Why Go: Lose yourself in the lush sounds of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Boughton, with guest artist Karina Canellakis on violin. Saturday night’s repertoire includes pieces by Corigliano, Chausson, Saint-Saens, and Berlioz.
- Price: Adult tickets start at $25.00; tickets for ages 6-18 start at $5.00
Sunset Cruise on Lake Accotink
- Where: 7500 Accotink Park Road, Springfield
- When: Saturday, September 17th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Why Go: Cruise the shoreline of Lake Accotink at sunset while you observe plant and animal life on and around the lake, and learn about the history of the park. Beverages will also be served onboard. For ages 18 and up.
- Price: $6.00

- Where: Green Spring Gardens, 4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria
- When: Saturday, September 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Why Go: This fundraiser will have activities for everyone, including: live music, a plant and craft sale, and a silent auction. Proceeds raised help acquire plants for the garden and add to Green Spring’s education efforts.
- Price: Admission is FREE
South Fairfax Chamber Challenge 10K and Fun Run
- Where: South County Secondary School, 8501 Silverbrook Road, Lorton
- When: Sunday, September 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Why Go: Runners can register for the 10K race, and there will also be a free 1 mile Fun Run for the kids. Families will enjoy the Children’s Fun Fair, which will include music, carnival games, arts and crafts, and the “Iron Man Challenge”. This event benefits the academic and athletic programs at SCSS.
- Price: Children’s programs are FREE; $30.00 registration fee for the 10K race
- Where: This annual festival takes place at various locations in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland. Most of the events will be held at GMU in Fairfax. Click on the website for location information.
- When: Sunday, September 18th through Friday, September 23rd. Local Events: Wednesday, September 21st at 10:30 a.m. at Kings Park Library, Burke; Wednesday, September 21st at 12:30 p.m. at NOVA, Annandale; Thursday, September 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at Burke Centre Library, Burke. - Why Go: Don’t miss this year’s festival, which will include 150 authors and six days of readings, discussions, performances, and exhibitions at more than 25 area venues.
