Where is Mittens? Feral Cat Missing 10 Days After Getting Lost In Rafters At Crosspointe Animal Hospital

Animal hospital staff think he's gone.

There is still no sign of Mittens, the four-year-old feral cat that got stuck in the rafters of Crosspointe Animal Hospital in Fairfax Station on July 19. Hospital staff are assuming that the cat has left the building, since food that was placed days ago is still untouched.

"We don't think it (Mittens) is here, because we have food in the ceiling and it hasn't been disturbed," said the on-duty manager at the animal hospital, who deferred questions to her superior, who had left for the day.

John Monrreal of Fairfax Station is Mittens' owner. "We're pretty much resigned to the fact that Mittens is not alive anymore," he said. "But there was some activity on Thursday when they found fresh urine on some of the tiles in the ceiling area."

A building contractor went into the rafters and saw Mittens last week, but was unable to catch him, said Monrreal. Cat traps with food were set, and food and water were left out at certain spots along the rafters.

Monrreal was told that there is the chance that Mittens escaped by pushing through a small opening of medal siding in the roof.

"If he did get out, he would've been in a weakened state and I don't know about his chances of surviving outside," he said. "And if he didn't escape I guess the only thing is that he will start decaying and there will be a smell, so I guess they can do something about it then."
