You may be seeing Easter candy commercials on television, but don't be fooled: More winter weather is expected in the area by Wednesday night.

new winter storm, Pax, has southern states on alert, but the extended forecast should put locals on notice as snow and ice may move into Virginia on Wednesday and Thursday.

The current forecast for Northern Virginia from the National Weather Service calls for a 90 percent chance of snow Wednesday night and snow and sleet Thursday morning, followed by rain and snow in the afternoon and snow showers possible Thursday night.

The forecast discussion from the NWS suggests the severity of the storm is difficult to measure, but the more likely scenario, "would bring significant amounts of precipitation to the area, causing the potential for a major winter storm."

Alex Liggitt at ABC7 explains the challenge in determining how much snow is coming to the D.C. area.

"As usual with these kind of storms, snowfall totals will completely depend on the exact track, which at this point is still up in the air," Liggitt writes. "Just a difference in 50 miles can greatly determine snowfall amounts across the area."
