Weekend Planner: Fireside Chat at Sully, DC Big Flea, Cajun Music, Dr. Seuss on Tap

Looking for some fun activities for the weekend? Look no further. We found a few events around the area we think you'll enjoy:

• DC Big Flea Market Love hunting for treasures? Than this event is for you: Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, D.C. Big Flea Market takes places at the Dulles Expo South Hall. You'll find period and country furniture, collectibles at every price point, jewelry, glassware, silver, primitives and porcelain. Call (757) 430-4735 for more information. Admission is $8.

• Fireside Chat at Sully:  After a tour, sit by the fire in the outdoor kitchen to enjoy refreshments and historical tidbits in an informal atmosphere. Tours take place at Sully Historic Site from noon to 3 p.m. The cost is $8 per adult, $7 per student, and $6 for seniors and children. For information, call 703-437-1794.

• Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton: When Sleeping Beauty keeps falling asleep, her parents leave to find Magical, the famous magician. Magical comes to the rescue with his helper, Edgar, and his talking cat. Tickets $8 for children under 12, $12 for adults; Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Running time 55 minutes with one intermission, appropriate for all ages. Concessions available before the performance and at intermission. *Limited seating, advance ticket reservations are recommended for this event. Reserved tickets may be collected at Will Call beginning 30 minutes prior to event, doors open for seating 15 minutes prior. Produced by Mestey Films Productions, this is a live-theatre performance for children and families.

• George Mason University Center for the Arts, Fairfax: The Turtle Island Quarter performs Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall, with special guest Michael Doucet, fiddle. These accomplished Grammy Award-winning artists explore the myriad faces of Cajun music, a quintessentially American genre. Inspired by Virgil Thomson’s 1949 Pulitzer Prize-winning film score for Louisiana Story, this collaboration with Michael Doucet reflects a long time connection among these extraordinary instrumentalists. Turtle Island Quartet, the world’s preeminent cross-genre string quartet, has spent more than 25 years expanding the definition of classical music by infusing the string quartet esthetic with jazz, folk, rock, and ethnic music. Pre-Performance Discussion: Mark Summer and David Balakrishnan, Founding Members, Turtle Island Quartet  Ticket prices are: $23, $38, $46. 1 Free Student Ticket Available with Mason ID

• Dr. Seuss' Birthday Extravaganza Naturalists share the tales of 'Yertle the Turtle', 'Gertrude McFuzz' at Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2. See real woodland creatures that share some of the same talents, and make crafts. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Participants must be at least age three. • Good Shepherd Preschool Family Fun Festival & Children's Thrift Sale: Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m., at 9350 Braddock Road in Burke. Indoor family festival. Games, moon bounce, food and a big children's thrift sale. Great fun for all!

• Fancy Cats Rescue Adoption Event: FancyCats Rescue is having an adoption event every Sunday at the Springfield PetsMart. Find a furry friend to take home forever!

• Civil War Paintings By George Holmes: Just in time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, George Holmes is displaying for the first time two paintings: Antietam and The Battle of Salem Creek. Exhibit is free to the public at the Frame Factory in Alexandria.

• Woodlawn Needlework Exhibition: Starts today Friday and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Woodlawn Plantation in Mount Vernon, with continuing exhibition Wednesday through Monday, ending on March 31. Daily admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students through grade 12, and free for children ages five and under. Friends of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House are admitted free.
