Cable Company Offers Free Calls to Japan

Cox opens lines through March 31st

Cox Communications of Herndon announced earlier this week that calls placed to Japan with Cox Digital Telephone will be free of charge through Thursday, March 31st.  The free calls can be made for customers who use Cox Digital Telephone, to both landline and cellular telephones dialed to country code "81."

Customers who want to make calls don't need to do anything, the company said in a press release. The program is automatic for all residential Cox Digital Telephone customers with Cox Long Distance.

In addition to calling, Cox also made TV Japan (Channel 287) available for customers with Cox Advanced TV access in Fairfax County. TV Japan, a 24-hour comprehensive news channel in both Japanese and English, is currently available in these Cox markets. The programming began to air for free on March 11th and will continue until March 31st.

"We want to make it easier for our customers to get in touch with their friends and family members in Japan and stay informed of the situation during this terrible tragedy," said Gary McCollum, general manager of Cox Virginia, in a news release. "Calls to Japan are free to our customers who have Cox Long Distance on their home phone; the calls will automatically go through free of charge for these customers," said McCollum. "I am very proud of our employees' commitment to the communities we serve and this program exemplifies our commitment to Cox communities."
