SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, EVENTS

Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Burke Centre Festival

Where: At the flagpole in front of the Conservancy Community Center, 6060 Burke Centre Parkway, Burke.

A special wreath-laying ceremony will commemorate the ten-year anniversary of 9/11.

Pentagon Memorial Fund Fundraiser

Where: Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub, 713 King Street, Alexandria.

When: Saturday, September 10, 2 p.m. – midnight.

Cost:  There is a $10 admission fee at the door, a portion of which will be donated to PMF.

The event will offer an hors d’oeuvre buffet from 2 – 7 p.m; and a cash bar, door prizes, and silent and live auctions from 2 p.m. - midnight.

Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9/11 Memorial 5k

Where: DoubleTree Crystal City, 300 Army Navy Drive, Arlington.

When: Saturday, September 10. 6 p.m.

Cost: Race registration is filled, but spectators are welcome.

9/11 Liberty Memorial Ceremony

Where: Prince William County Government Center, Liberty Memorial, 5 County Complex Court, Woodbridge.

When: Saturday, September 10, 6 p.m.

Cost: Free

The ceremony commemorating the tenth anniversary of 9/11will include performances by the Prince William Community Band and the New Dominion Choraliers.

Still Standing-Still Free Event

Where: Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax.

When: Saturday, September 10, 7 – 11:30 p.m.

Cost: $50

A ten-year commemorative photography exhibit of 9/11 by Sean Kelley, Stephen Jaffe, Bob Pugh and other artists. Live music by the Michael Clem Trio, and food catered by Brion’s Grille. Cash bar.

Arlington 9/11 Tribute

Where: Air Force Memorial, 1 Air Force Memorial Drive, Arlington.

When: Saturday, September 10, 7:30 p.m.

Cost: Free

A concert featuring music by the Army Brass Quintet, Wakefield High School Choir and Macedonia Baptist musicians; the Arlington County combined Color Guard; and members of the 9/11 Victims’ Families Foundation.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, EVENTS

Memorial Service

Where: Memorial Garden, St. Peter’s in the Woods Episcopal Church, 5911 Fairview Woods Drive, Fairfax Station.

When: Sunday, September 11, 8:46 a.m.

Cost: Free

A commemorative memorial service to honor the victims, their families and the first responders of 9/11. Service will begin at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the north tower of the World Trade Center and will include a moment of silence, special prayers and Holy Eucharist. In addition, the church will be open during a prayer vigil from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. for anyone seeking time of prayer or contemplation. A regularly scheduled Sunday Holy Eucharist service at 10:15 a.m. will also be held. 

Official Pentagon Memorial 10 Year Commemoration

Where: Pentagon Memorial, 1 Rotary Road on the Pentagon Reservation in Arlington.

When: Sunday, September 11, 9:30 a.m.

Cost: Free

The Pentagon will have an invite-only ceremony for families of 9/11 victims. The Pentagon Memorial will re-open to the general public following the ceremony.

Arlington Historical Society's 9/11 Commemoration Event

Where: Hume School, 1805 South Arlington Ridge Road, Arlington.

When:  Sunday, September 11, 9:37 a.m.

Cost: Free

The Arlington Historical Society will ring the bell 184 times, once for each victim of the 9/11 Pentagon attack. The Arlington Historical Museum, located in the Hume School, will also have a special Pentagon exhibit on display.

9/11 Ceremony

Where: Freeman Store and Museum, 131 Church Street, N.E. Vienna.

When: Sunday, September 11, 9:45 a.m.

Cost: Free

A ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 180 and the town of Vienna.

Town of Vienna’s A Day to Remember

Where: On the grounds of the historic Freeman House, 131 Church Street, N.E., Vienna.

When: Sunday, September 11, beginning at 10 a.m.

Colonel David A. Lapan of the United States Marine Corps will be the keynote speaker. The public is invited to remember those who lost their lives and to show support for those engaged in the ongoing fight against terrorism. “A Day to Remember” is sponsored by Vienna’s American Legion Post 180 in cooperation with the Town of Vienna. 

Arlington Bell Ringing

Where: Constitution Bicentennial Gardens, North George Mason Drive and Wilson Boulevard, Arlington.

When: Sunday, September 11, Noon

Cost: Free

The Bluemont Civic Association is sponsoring the ringing of a vintage Pennsylvania church bell to commemorate 9/11.

Reston Association's Sept. 11 Tribute

Where: Freedom Grove in Brown's Chapel Park, 1575 Browns Chapel Road, Reston.

When: Sunday, September 11, 1 p.m.

Community leaders will honor local residents who were lost on September 11, 2001. The South Lakes High School color guard will perform and Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins will speak. A musical performance at Brown's Chapel will follow the ceremony.

Fairfax County 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony

Where: Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.

When: Sunday, September 11, 2 – 3 p.m.  Please arrive by 1:45.

Cost: Free

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, Fire Chief Ronald L. Mastin and Police Chief Col. David M. Rohrer are scheduled to deliver remarks reflecting upon the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The Public Safety Honor Guard and Fairfax County Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts also will be participating in the ceremony which begins in the Government Center Forum, followed by a procession outside to the 9/11 Memorial Grove.

Breaking News Breaking Down Film

Where: Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax.

When: Sunday, September 11, 2 p.m.

Cost: Free

Broadcast journalist Mike Walter, who witnessed the attack on the Pentagon, will show and discuss his award-winning documentary film. The film examines the reactions and reflections of journalists, who cover major breaking news stories, including Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina.

The World Sings for Peace Concert

Where: Arlington Presbyterian Church, 3507 Columbia Pike, Arlington.

When: Sunday, September 11, 4 p.m.

Cost: Free

A concert by the NOVA Lights Chorale performing works in Hebrew, Swahilia, Arabic, English, Korean and Latin, accompanied by hand bells, violin, cello, clarinet, piano, bass and percussion.

Community Sept. 11 Commemoration
Where: St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 1700 Wainwright Drive, Reston.

When: Sunday, September 11, 5 p.m.

Cost: Free

The memorial celebration will include the music of Mosaic Harmony, and other communities of faith including All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS), Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, Washington Plaza Baptist, and United Christian Parish.

Evensong Service of Remembrance

Where: St. James’ Episcopal Church, 14 Cornwall St. N.W, Leesburg.

When: Sunday, September 11, 5 p.m.

Cost: Free

An Evensong service which will include prayers, litany readings and music.

Great Falls Defense of Freedom Memorial 9-11 Ceremony

Where: Great Falls Library grounds, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls.

When: Sunday, September 11, 7 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, EVENT

A Decade After 9-11

Where: St. George’s Episcopal Church, 915 N. Oakland St., Arlington.

When: Wednesday, September 14, Labyrinth 6 to 7:30 at the Parish Hall; Taize 7:30 – 8:15 in the Nave.

In honor and memory of the 9-/11victims, first responders and their families, a Labyrinth and a Taize.
