Lane Closures on the Fairfax County Parkway This Week

Virginia Megaprojects released their information on road closures the week of July 2 on the Fairfax County Parkway and beyond.

BRAC / FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY EXTENSION PROJECT

Nighttime work - Closures occur between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless otherwise noted.

  • No scheduled closures

Daytime work - Closures occur Monday - Thursday between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to noon unless otherwise noted. * Starting noon Tuesday, July 3, until 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 5, in observation of the Independence Day Holiday.

  • Fairfax County Pkwy. (Route 286) north and south from Pohick Rd. overpass to Rolling Rd. - Single lane closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for paving, signage and electrical work.
  • Franconia Springfield Pkwy. (Route 289) east from Rolling Rd. to Accotink Creek bridge - Single lane closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for signal, electrical and paving work.
  • Franconia Springfield Pkwy. (Route 289) east ramp to Barkers Ct. - Alternating single lane closures Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for shoulder work.
  • Fairfax County Pkwy. extension (Route 286) north to Franconia-Springfield Pkwy (Route 289) - Single lane of ramp closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for shoulder work.
  • Fairfax County Pkwy. extension (Route 286) north and south from Barta Rd. to new Rolling Rd. overpass - Single lane closed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for paving and median work.
  • Relocated Rolling Rd. north and south from Richfield Rd. to Barkers Ct. - Single lane closures Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for shoulder construction. Two-way traffic will be directed by a flagger.

DULLES CORRIDOR METRORAIL PROJECT

Nighttime work - Closures Sunday - Thursday nights occur between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless otherwise noted. Friday and Saturday night closures will occur 9:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. 

  • I-495 north to Exit 46A, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) south - Ramp closed Tuesday and Thursday - Saturday nights for guide way repairs.
  • Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west from Spring Hill Rd. to Westwood Center Dr. - Left lane closed Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for station work.
  • Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east from Westwood Center Dr. to Spring Hill Rd. - Left lane and two left 
    turn lanes closed Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for station work and landscaping. Traffic will be directed to continue east make a U-turn at Westpark Dr. onto Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and make a right onto Spring Hill Rd.
  • Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) south from Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) to Anderson Rd. - Right and center lane closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for paving.
  • Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) south to Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for milling and overlay. Traffic will be directed to make a left onto Colshire Dr., right on Colshire Meadow Dr., right on Old Meadow Dr., right onto Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) north and follow signs to Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east.
  • Galleria Dr. east at Tysons Blvd. - Right turn lane closed Thursday - Saturday nights for station work. Traffic will be directed to continue east, make a right onto Tysons Blvd., left onto International Dr. and follow signs to Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123).
  • Galleria Dr. west at Tysons Blvd. - Three left turn lanes closed Thursday - Saturday nights for station work. Traffic will be directed to make a right onto Tysons Blvd., left onto International Dr., and follow signs to Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123).
  • Tysons Blvd. east at Galleria Dr. - Two lanes closed Thursday - Saturday nights for station work. Traffic will be directed to make a left onto Galleria Dr., right onto Tysons Blvd., left on International Dr. and follow signs to Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123).

Police will be on site for motorist safety.
All closures are weather permitting.

Weekday work

  • Expect single lane closures between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and from 9:30 to noon on Fridays in the Tysons Corner area along the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267), Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123).

All closures are weather permitting.

495 EXPRESS LANES PROJECT

Nighttime work - Closures Sunday - Thursday nights occur between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless otherwise noted. Friday and Saturday night closures will occur 9:30 p.m. to 9 a.m.

  • I-495 south from Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193) to Oak St. overpass - Three lanes closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for overhead sign and paving work. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east at I-495 - Two left lanes closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for sign installation. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • Dulles Connector Rd. (Route 267) east to I-495 north - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for utility work.  Traffic will be directed to continue east to Exit 19A, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) south and follow signs to I-495 south.
  • I-495 north to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) north - Ramps closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to take Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) south, stay to the right, follow signs to I-495 south and stay to the right to enter onto Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) north.
  • I-495 south to Exit 47B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to take Exit 47B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and make a U-turn at International Dr. onto Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east.
  • I-495 north to Exit 47A and B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and east - Ramps closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Exit 46A, Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) south, make a left onto International Dr. south and follow signs to Leesburg Pike (Route 7).
  • Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and east to I-495 north - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to take International Dr. north, make a right onto Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) north and follow signs to I-495 north.
  • Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and east to I-495 south - Ramps closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for sign work and paving. Traffic will be directed to make a right onto International Dr. north, make a right onto Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) north and follow signs to I-495 south.
  • Jones Branch Dr. north and south from Westpark Dr. to Westbranch Dr. - Road closed Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for sign work. Traffic will be directed to follow posted detour signs.
  • Galleria Dr. north and south at Westpark Dr. - Right or left lane closed Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for signal work. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • Westpark Dr. overpass at Chain Bridge Rd. (Route 123) - Road closed Monday, Thursday and Friday nights for sign work. Traffic will be directed to follow posted detour signs.
  • I-495 south from Oak St. overpass to Lee Hwy. (Route 29) overpass - Three lanes closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for paving and utility work. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • I-495 north from Oak St. overpass to Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193) - Three lanes closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for paving, painting, and utility work.  Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • I-495 south to Exit 49, I-66 west - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for demolition. Detour for full ramp closure - Traffic will be directed to continue south to Exit 52B, Little River Tpk. (Route 236) east, stay to the right, follow signs to I-495 north and take Exit 49, I-66 west.
  • I-66 west to I-495 south - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday, Thursday - Saturday nights for overhead sign installation and road work. Traffic will be directed to continue west to Exit 62, Nutley St. south, stay to the right, follow signs to I-66 east to I-495 south.
  • I-66 west from I-495 to Gallows Rd. overpass - Two lanes closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for bridge demolition. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes.
  • I-66 east general purpose (right exit) or HOV (left exit) to I-495 north - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for bridge demolition and sign work. Traffic will be directed to use the I-66 east HOV ramp (left exit) or general purpose ramp (right exit) to access I-495 north. 
  • Nutley St. north and south to I-66 east - Ramps closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for overhead sign installation. Traffic will be directed to take I-66 west to Exit 57A, Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy. (Route 50) east, stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 east.
  • I-495 south at Exit 50, Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) - Road closed Friday night for joint repair. Traffic will be directed to use the collector distributor road.
  • I-495 north at Exit 50, Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) - Road closed Saturday night for joint repair. Traffic will be directed to use the collector distributor road.
  • I-495 north from Exit 50, Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) to Oak St. overpass - Three lanes closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for paving, utility work and steel beam erection. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) west and Fairview Park Dr. to I-495 north - Ramps closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for overhead sign work. Traffic will be directed to continue west to Gallows Rd. (Route 650) south and follow signs to I-495 north.
  • I-495 south from Exit 51, Gallows Rd. (Route 650) to Heming Ave. underpass - Three lanes closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights will close for bridge work. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • I-495 north from Exit 51, Gallows Rd. (Route 650) to Lee Hwy. (Route 29) - Three lanes closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for paving. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • I-495 south to Exit 54B, Braddock Rd. (Route 620) east - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for milling and paving. Traffic will be directed to take Exit 54A, Braddock Rd. (Route 620) west and make a left at the signal onto Braddock Rd. (Route 620) east.
  • I-495 south to Exit 54A, Braddock Rd. (Route 620) west - Ramp closed Sunday, Monday and Thursday - Saturday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to continue south to Exit 567B, I-395 north to Exit 2, Edsall Rd. west, stay to the right, follow signs to I-395 south, take Exit 1D, I-495 north (Inner Loop) toward Tysons Corner and take Exit 54A, Braddock Rd. (Route 620).

Weekday work

  • Expect single lane closures between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and from 9:30 to noon on Fridays on the Inner and Outer Loops of I-495 from Springfield Interchange to beyond the Dulles Toll Rd. (Route 267) within the project area including all connecting arterials.

Ongoing work

  • Twelve interchanges along the I-495 corridor from the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road are under construction until December 2012. Visit the 495 Express Lanes Interchange Fact Sheet Page.
