South Carolina Man Killed in I-66 Crash at Fairfax County Parkway

Authorities have released more details about Monday afternoon's fatal crash

UPDATED 9 p.m.

A crash on Interstate 66 killed a South Carolina man Monday afternoon.

Virginia State Police officials said that at about 4 p.m., a 1997 BMW sedan was traveling in the westbound lanes of Interstate 66 near Monument Drive when the driver of the car lost control of his vehicle.

The BMW ran off the side of the road, struck a guardrail, then crossed back into the westbound lanes and struck a 1999 Ford Explorer, authorities said.

The Ford Explorer spun out and overturned. The driver of the Explorer was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from his vehicle. He died at the scene.

The driver of the BMW was not injured in the crash.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man killed in the crash.

Traffic on the roadway was bumper to bumper as officials investigated the accident. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor. All lanes were reopened as of 8 p.m.

A fatal crash on the westbound lanes of I-66 just before the Fairfax County Parkway will snarl this afternoon's commute.

All lanes of I-66 are completely blocked as Virginia State Police troopers investigate the two-vehicle crash. Traffic is being diverted onto Route 50.

The accident was reported just before 4 p.m. Officials have not yet reported whether there were any other injuries.
