Fairfax Station Patch readers respond to the news of the week

Fairfax Station Patch readers had a lot to say on the news of the week. Here are some highlights from the comments:

If this vote stands it will be a negative comment on the political acuity of Delegate Vivian Watts, Supervisor McKay, School Board member Moon, and other Ward endorsers. But mostly it will be a repudiation of the power and influence of Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova. She knows Braddock will not elect a far lefty, but choosing Republican Chris Wade to face Cook was just to much for them to take so Sen. Chap Petersen, the bloggers at NLS and others turned to Janet Oleszek. The low turnout even in precincts that never get lower than 30-40% indicates there is no desire to replace Cook on the Board. He is one of the most, intelligent members of the Board. He has ingenious ideas for solutions to the county's challenges, and in two years has directly touched the lives of scores of his constituent.'. Ms Bulova has tried to portray Mr. Cook as someone who doesn't cooperate with others on the Board and is not engaged with Braddock voters. From conversations I had yesterday working the polls, I discovered that even her fellow Democrats know none of that bilge is true. The question for Braddock voters in November will be simple. Do we keep the intelligent, involved, inventive, and innovative John Cook? Or, do we go with Oleszek; the person the Washington Post described in her last political race in 2007 that she lost as "embarrassingly short on substance?" That's just no contest, folks. Linda Bartlett

Yes, Supervisor Cook has served diligently, but Braddock District needs a supervisor who will represent all residents of the district and not just Burke/Fairfax residents. Linda Knoche

I was at the Burke Target with my kids. I first thought a VRE train had derailed because I *heard* something first; then the floor started to rumble and stuff started falling off the shelves. My son tripped and fell down. Then the shelves themselves started to sway and the floor looked like it was undulating. The lights stayed on, but the ceiling tiles looked like it was warbling. All this happened for about 8-10 seconds. By the time I started to think that what was happening was truly serious and started to look for a door jamb (which in Target there are none...), it was over. The shoppers were mostly calm and actively curious, but nothing stops Target faithful, they calmly wheeled their carts to the checkouts and decided that once it was calm again, it was time to go home... but not without their stuff. I wanted to leave, but my kids knew I wasn't coming back for the Nerf guns we had in our cart, so they prevailed. The biggest irony, people were still coming in too... it was surreal. I wonder what will shake some people... they seemed truly unfazed, like this happens all the time. (Incidentally, I do recall the 3.9 & 4.3 quakes in 2003, but this tops them both.) I was just glad we were ok.When I got home, hanged paintings and mirrors were off kilter, things had fallen off shelves and my dog was very relieved to see us. We are very lucky. Molly

I was voting in the Primary. I had just picked up my ballot and began to mark it when the table started shaking. The entire room started moving as if it was on an escalator gone berserk. Nancy Ehlke

My feeling is that the current restrictions on controlled hunting within Fairfax County are more than enough to ensure the public’s safety while attempting to reduce the deer over population.
Let’s face it, today the only natural enemy a deer has in Northern Virginia to control their numbers is vehicular!
In a perfect world, there would be a more humane solution. Unfortunately, that world simply does not exist. Joe Brenchick

Hunting has been going on since the beginning of time... I suggest if you are worried about controlling the population of the people taking the deers space, you move to Montana-as that ship has sailed.. Fire up the grill for some venison ribs, it's a win-win.. Rick S

I think this barbaric and excuse to allow hunting in urban areas. There are other methods to control the deer population like sterilizations. Once again VA sides with the crazies (includes the officials) on how to solve problems the fastest easiest way. I heard nothing about how to control the over population of people who are taking the deer’s space. Madonna Rabatin
