The Iraq War, 10 Years of Casualties: Fairfax Station, Clifton and Lorton Feel its Touch

Three area residents are among the 134 Virginians and 4,802 Americans and allies lost in the war.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week -- on March 19, 2003 -- and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 134 Virginians.

Among them are soldiers from Fairfax Station, Clifton and Lorton. From the CNN war casualties web site:

  • Lt. Col Thomas A. Wren, 44, U.S. Army Reserve, of Lorton - Killed in a non-hostile vehicle crash near Dhi Qar Tallil Air Base near Nasiriyah, Iraq, on Nov. 5, 2011. Wren was a member of the Multi-National Security Transition Command. 
  • Private 1st Class Dillon M. Jutras, 20, U.S. Army 75th Rangers, of Fairfax Station - Killed by hostile fire in Anbar Husaybah, Oct. 28, 2005.
  • 2nd Lt. Jeffrey Joseph, 24, U.S. Army, of Clifton - Killed by an enemy-thrown grenade in Baghdad, April 7, 2003.
