When Is Daylight Saving Time?

Don't forget to "spring forward" this weekend.

Ready to lose an hour of sleep Fairfax Station? Everyone will set their clocks forward an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday in the biannual ritual of Daylight Saving Time (DST). Some of us see this time of year as losing an hour of sleep, but it also is one of the many signatures of spring being on its way, hence "spring forward."

DST was standardized in the United States by the 1966 Uniform Time Act, according to National Geographic. The act has since been amended multiple times — most recently by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 in which DST was extended by a month.

According to The Huffington Post, there is currently a petition seeking to either end DST or make it the year-round standard. The petition is listed on the White House's "We the People" crowdsourcing platform, and it urges President Barack Obama to eliminate the "archaic practice" of changing clocks twice a year. The petition needs 100,000 signatures to receive a response from the West Wing.
