Help Save Early Intervention Services in Fairfax

Letter to the Editor: The Infant and Toddler Connection, serving children in Fairfax County, seeks state help to meet a budget shortfall.

There are few things as valuable as early intervention for helping our youngest citizens become successful adults.

The Fairfax–Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) has been dedicated since 1994 to providing early intervention services through the Infant and Toddler Connection (ITC).  These services include speech therapy, learning and movement therapy and physical therapy.

We have been honored to help so many children learn to speak first words and take first steps towards health development.  These services greatly decrease the cost for the county and state for long-term care, by helping children learn to be an independent as possible.

What is the Crisis?

The successful work of the Infant and Toddler Connection has been rewarded with dramatic increases in referrals.  We’ve seen 38 percent growth in the last two years.

While we know that our services are needed more than ever, we need your help to continue.  Fairfax County cannot continue to fully fund the rising cost of these services alone.  Join us in asking Governor McDonnell to have the state of Virginia support early intervention. We are currently looking a shortfall of $1 million for this program, which would require families needing our services to go on waiting lists before receiving help.  We can do better.

How Can I Help?

Please take five minutes today and contact the Governor to ask him to support the Infant and Toddler Connection in Fairfax.  You can:

What Do I Say?
If you’re a friend of ITC, here's a sample email or conversation:

“I am contacting Governor McDonnell to ask him to support early intervention services in Fairfax County.  The critical supports they provide to families, babies, and young children make a dramatic difference in the lives of the children, and decrease their long-term support needs.  Please support increased funding for Part C and provide the $8.5 million requested to support early intervention programs across the state.  The window of opportunity for these services is too small to jeopardize.”

If your loved one has used ITC services:

“I am contacting Governor McDonnell to ask him to support early intervention services in Fairfax County.  Without early intervention my (son/daughter/loved one) would not have learned to (talk/walk/develop skills necessary for growth). Thanks to Infant and Toddler Connection, my (son/daughter/loved one) can now (share a success story!) Please support increased funding for Part C and provide the $8.5 million requested to support early intervention programs across the state.  The window of opportunity for these services is too small to jeopardize.”

Thank you for your support of ITC!
