Letter to Constituents: 'Hold out for Hunger' Day

Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn updates residents.

Dear 41st District Voter,

During this year's General Assembly session, I introduced House Joint Resolution 107 designating April 14, 2012 as the first annual “Hold Out for Hunger” Day in Virginia.  I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you a few facts about hunger in Virginia.

Over 11.8% of Virginians struggle with food insecurity. This translates to over 900,000 Virginians being forced to choose between providing food for their families or paying their rent or mortgage, transportation or medical bills. These tough choices are being made everyday across the Commonwealth.

Through the assistance of local agencies and volunteers, our Virginia food banks are able to provide nutritious, fresh foods to Virginians struggling with hunger, safe and nurturing places for children to have a meal, emergency assistance for disaster victims, and a chance at self-sufficiency for individuals trying to break the cycle of poverty and hunger.

I hope “Hold out for Hunger” Day will serve to bring greater attention to our Virginia food banks and the work they do in helping members of our community. This day provides Virginians the opportunity to skip one meal and donate the cost of the meal to a food bank, in an effort to prevent hunger. To learn more about the Virginia Food Bank, please visit http://vafoodbanks.org/.

Please feel free to contact me at any time about “Hold Out for Hunger” Day or other legislation introduced during the past legislative session. I am always available to meet personally with you to discuss any issues and I can be reached directly by e-mail at Eileen@EileenFillerCorn.com or by phone at (571)249-3453.

Sincerely yours,

Eileen Filler-Corn
Member, Virginia House of Delegates
