Using Tech to Make 'Handmade' Gifts

There's still time!

The best gifts capture your friendship in a moment. Tech can be used in innumerable ways to create something that shares who you are and what your friends and family mean to you. No need for mastery of a hot glue gun or the ability to draw a straight line, use tech tools to express yourself.

Here are some ideas of gifts you can make that show that you have paid attention to their interests and that take advantage of your personality and creativity.

The Mixtape Re-mixed

Crafting the perfect playlist is harder in a digital era. With digital music you are expected to not 'share' the music with others. This doesn't mean you are without options.

Make a Movie

Whether a a gathering of snapshots or newly shot footage, a movie can be a great gift. You don't have to be a brilliant director, but you can make a personal and heartfelt statement that can inspire tears or laughter if you invest the time and planning to create your film.

Make a Spreadsheet of Your Books or Movies

  • Offer to share with your friends in the winter months.
  • Use Google Docs and establish who is able to view the list, add their own collections and how to arrange checking items in and out. You could create a shared calendar for your group and establish a method for coordinating everyone's complicated schedule.

Create a Book or Blog For Sharing Recipes

  • Include photos of not only the finished product - include tips, techniques and mistakes to inject your personality into the project.
  • Your holiday gift can be a combination of a food gift and a link to the blog to 'watch this space' for future updates.

Jean: You have a knack for presenting complicated tech information in a way that is user-friendly and pleasant. Thank you! I recommend that this post be circulated year-round, as there are many gift-giving opportunities all the time. Kudos!
