Fatal Crash Shuts Down Ox Road at Zion Drive; Elderly Woman Killed

The crash was reported Thursday afternoon.

An elderly woman was killed and three others were injured in an afternoon crash at the intersection of Ox Road and Zion Drive Thursday.

The two cars, both Lexus sedans, collided with each other at the intersection just before 1 p.m., said police spokesman Officer E.J. Azcarate. The crash resulted in severe traffic along Ox Road hours after the accident.

The elderly woman was in her vehicle alone and died at the scene, police said.

The second Lexus contained a woman and two young children, Azcarate said. They were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and were in serious condition.

Azcarate said that police would not be releasing the names of anyone involved until their families were notified of the crash.

Traffic investigators are looking into the cause of the crash. No further information was available at this time.

Not good. Not even a 4-way intersection. People really need to chill out.

Not good.
But it always amuses me when press states that no names will be released until families are notified, then posts pictures, sometimes with license plates visible, or identifying information. Not necessarily in this case (though an 80-year-old woman in a silver Lexus, with license plate # visible?), but I've seen "four freshmen at UVa, driving an orange Mustang and returning from a visit to GMU", for example.

Probably shouldn't post pics of accident if families haven't been contacted. Vehicle on truck shows license plate!

You will notice the tag is covered on the car with the fatality..

How does it enhance our knowledge of this event to see the victim labeled as "elderly." Giving someone's age is standard newspaper practice and makes perfect sense. But characterizing someone's age with this adjective in two separate Patch articles? What is the definition of "elderly"?

Agreed - 72 isn't necessarily elderly. My mother-in-law still teaches and dances and she's 72 years young. My condolences to the family of this woman.

First, my condolences to the family of the lady who died, and I hope the others get well soon.
Second, I had the same reaction that Robert and Dee had--"elderly?". I think we've picked up on something that media outlets are going to have to rethink as we all live longer and understand aging so much more than before.

I forgot to add thanks to Patch for covering this story that is important to our communities. I couldn't find info about it anywhere else. Thanks, too, to my neighborhood email list which notified people that same afternoon re avoiding traffic problems, and of the tragedy.
