Crash Snarls I-66 Morning Commute

The crash was reported just before 7 a.m. Wednesday

A fiery three-vehicle crash on I-66 Wednesday snarled the morning commute and injured one driver.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-66 at the 49 mile marker in Fairfax County at about 7 a.m., according to the Virginia State Police.

A tractor-trailer drifted into the left lane and struck a Cadillac CTS. The tractor-trailer pushed the Cadillac into the far left HOV lane where the vehicles struck a Toyota Prius. The Cadillac spun out and the tractor-trailer veered off about 300 feet before coming to a rest and bursting into flames, authorities said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, David J. Simensen, 45, of Woodbridge, was taken to Prince William Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The trailer was empty at the time of the crash. Simensen was charged with failure to maintain control of his vehicle.

Due to the fire, many eastbound lanes of I-66 were shut down were shut down until just before 10 a.m.
