Sheriff's Office Honors Fairfax Station Resident

The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office has honored a Fairfax Station man for his volunteer work at the county adult detention center.

“I believe that you are very special individuals,” said Fairfax County Sheriff Stan Barry at an April 19 luncheon to recognize the 300 volunteers who work in the center.

Fairfax Station resident Elmer Thomas volunteers in the chaplain’s office and was given special recognition as “outstanding volunteer” in his division, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Also recognized was Robert Gisch of Annandale, James Kenedy of Vienna, and Bruce Potter of Chantilly.  

Volunteers assist in a variety of inmate programs at the detention center, including classes on life skills, job skills, addiction recovery, and educational advancement, among others.

In 2011, volunteers contributed more than 13,000 hours and presented more than 6,500 classes.
