A tractor-trailer burst into flames overnight on the northbound lanes of I-95 near the Lorton exit, killing the driver.
The Virginia State Police reported that the crash occurred at about 2 a.m., when a northbound tractor-trailer came upon a VDOT work zone. The tractor-trailer rear ended one of the work zone’s “cushion trucks.” The impact ruptured one of the tractor-trailer’s fuel tanks and caused an explosion.
The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene. His body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Manassas, authorities said. Officials have not yet identified the driver.
No one was in the cushion truck at the time of the crash.
Northbound lanes on I-95 re-opened at about 9 a.m., though officials cautioned that there would be residual delays from the crash throughout the morning.
