VIDEO: Firefighters Respond to Blaze at Home

Fire was reported at 4809 Briggs Road

Firefighters responded to a blaze at a two-story single family home Thursday afternoon.

The fire at 4809 Briggs Road was reported just before 1:30 p.m., Fairfax County Fire Rescue Department officials said. No one home at the time of the fire, said Captain Jason Jenkins, a spokesman for the department.

“There was significant damage to the second floor,” Jenkins said.

A firefighter who responded to the incident was taken to the hospital for injuries that were described as non-life threatening, said Captain Willie Bailey, another spokesman for the department. Bailey could not go further into the nature of the firefighter's injuries due to medical privacy laws.

About 65 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the majority of the blaze but spent much of the afternoon dealing with what Jenkins called “hot pockets” within the home. Most of the damage was sustained to the second story.

Representatives from the Red Cross were called in to offer assistance to the displaced residents.

Neighbor Quentin Maves was eating lunch this afternoon with his wife when they both heard a siren barreling down the street.

“We went outside and saw a fire truck going by,” Maves said. As he got closer to the home just about a block away, Maves said he “saw flames shooting through the roof and lots of smoke.”

The cause of the fire as well as the exact monetary damage to the home is under investigation.
