BLM Scraps Meadowood Plan

Seeks public input on best course of action

In a press release, the Bureau of Land Mangement, which owns and operates the Meadowood Special Recreation Area, has decided to terminate plans to replace the 46-stall barn/area with a 20-stall barn/area.

The announcement comes on the heels of a on Tuesday night where citizens expressed outrage at being left out of the decision-making process and with the proposal itself.

Terry Lewis, Chief of External Affairs for the BLM told Lorton Patch that the change in policy was partly a response to the feedback BLM received on Tuesday as well as  conversations with elected officials.

Lewis also said that the BLM still expects to complete the project by September 30, 2011 which is when the funds designated for Meadowood are due to elapse. September 30 is also when the fiscal year ends for BLM.

"We have every intention of meeting the deadline," Lewis said. "The project will just take a little longer on the front end, which will let us move quicker on the back end."

Lewis said the BLM has already started the process of acquiring government funds should the project, whether it's a new building or a rehabilitation effort, extend beyond the deadline and extend into the next fiscal year.
