Christmas Tree Safety Tips

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, Christmas tree fires are not too common, but when they occur they can be very serious.  Between 2005 and 2009, on average one of every 18 reported fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in a death.

In one-fifth of cases, the cause of the fire is a heat source (like a space heater or other heater) too close to the tree.

Here are some tips from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department that will help you prevent Christmas tree fires:

  • Keep tree base immersed in water.
  • Do not permit smoking near the tree.
  • Use only lights that are U.L. approved.
  • Use flame retardant decorations and paper.
  • Inspect lights for frayed or cracked wiring, broken plugs, and defective sockets.
  • Unplug lights at night and when leaving the home.
  • Remove the tree soon after the holidays–before the needles dry out.
