Clifton Elections: Meet Wayne Nickum

The Clifton town elections are Tuesday.

The town of Clifton elections are coming up on Tuesday, May 1. The current members of the town council are running unopposed, but the council is still encouraging residents to vote.

Polls will open starting at 6 a.m. and stay open through 7 p.m. at the Clifton town meeting hall at 12641 Chapel Road.

Patch sent each member of the council a questionnaire about Clifton's future. Their answers will run in advance of the election. Below is the questionnaire for town councilman, Wayne Nickum.

How long have you been on the town council?

Mayor, 1982-1992

Member of the Clifton Town Council 1974-1982, 1992-2004 and 2006-present

Can you describe a project that you have worked on while on the council that you are particularly proud of?

The town secured our Clifton Historic District under the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The process started in earnest after I was elected mayor in 1982 and it was completed in 1985.

What are some of the most important issues at the moment for Clifton residents?

The town is currently in the process of developing a Main Street enhancement plan. We recently held a public hearing to consider the adoption of our plan for inclusion in our Town Master Plan. The plan was to be adopted by the Town Council at our April 2012 Town Council meeting.

The current Clifton Town Code which covers Clifton signage is outdated and needs to be replaced. The Town’s Architectural Review Board, with input from the Town’s business community and residents, is currently working on a revision which should be considered and adopted by July 2012.

What is your vision for Clifton’s future? Would you like to see any additional projects in town?

We need to focus on our Main Street enhancement plan which is a long term project of the Town. Completion is driven by our ability to secure governmental grants.
