Lorton Arts Foundation to Hold 'Special Meeting' at Workhouse Arts Center

The Board will amend the FY2014 budget, vote on establishing a special reserve fund and giving the CEO the power to take 'Contingency Action'.

The Lorton Arts Foundation Board of Directors will hold a "special meeting" on Thursday, July 25, to revise the Workhouse Arts Center's FY 2014 budget, to establish a reserve fund and to authorize the "CEO to take contingency action".

The Workhouse Arts Center - the former home of the Lorton Prison - has struggled financially since it opened in 2008. It is set on 55 acres and features more than 100 artists with studios, live theater performances, classes, art shows, dinners and movie nights.

But the business plan at the Workhouse is deeply flawed, according to its President and CEO John Mason.

"Clearly we remain challenged by our financial model, which I've said time and again doesn't work," said Mason to Patch

Fairfax County gave the non-profit $750,000 for this fiscal year, down from $3,350,000 last year.

The meeting is scheduled from noon - 1:30 p.m at the McGuireWoods Gallery. The meeting's call to order will be followed by a closed session and then three votes by the board on the action items in the agenda.
