National Night Out is a nationwide block party that promotes crime prevention and police-community partnerships. The Bulovas helped form the Middleridge branch of the event about eight years ago. It is held each year at the beginning of August, the most recent one last week.

“They did the planning, got the band, and set up children’s games,” said neighbor Mary Vander Maten, who has known the family for over 10 years. “Last Tuesday night, they were on the cleanup team for the event without making any fanfare about it. He’s a solid worker but not showy.”

He said that Bulova routinely gives the association legislative updates. He also was helpful in answering questions during the 2010 snowstorms.

“On Snowmageddon, he helped coordinate VDOT and the locals,” Barfield said. “He allayed their fears and answered their phone calls on helping with snow removal.”

Bulova said that some of the bills he was most proud of during his term was , which removed barriers for businesses wanting to open electric car charging stations.

“It got rid of an obsolete law,” Bulova said.

The second one, House Bill 2100, authorized local authorities to require a national background checks for a child-care providers.

“I work hard to communicate with constituents and it’s important every one has a chance to dialogue,” Bulova said. “I try and keep an open mind.”
