Nike, Dr. Seuss Among Possible Names for South County Middle School

Take a poll online for your favorite name for South County's new facility for middle school students.

Fairfax County Public Schools is seeking input from parents on naming the new South County site for middle school students.

FCPS hosted a meeting on Feb. 13 to discuss possible names for the site on 8700 Laurel Crest Drive.

Construction on the new middle school is about 90 percent complete, according to FCPS. The 176,021 square-foot facility is set to open for the 2012-2013 school year.

Parents are invited to take a poll online for their prefered school name. The prosed names are below. The current results of the poll are not yet available to the public:

Harold J. Wilson Middle School

According to FCPS, Wilson was a poet who helped start a garden project at Lorton Prison where prisoners would grow produce and distribute it to homeless shelters. He also helped form a little league that would later become the Lorton Little League.

South County Middle School

This name was proposed because it would keep the ties with South County Secondary School.

Nike Middle School

Not to be confused with the athletic shoe brand, Project Nike was the name of anti-aircraft missile complexes in Fairfax County. One of the sites is located near the new middle school. According to the Project Nike historical site marker, the sites “were established during the Cold War to defend Washington from Soviet air attack.” It was in use from 1954 to 1974.

Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel Middle School

Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, is the author of childhood favorites like "The Cat in the Hat."

George A. Malcolm Middle School

Malcolm is a former deputy sheriff who served in the early 1900s and died in the line of duty. He was head of the head of the Lorton Valley School. Find out more about him here.

Mount Vernon School Board Rep. Dan Storck says that the school should be named for a suffragist - given their history with Lorton Prison and how that influenced a woman's right to vote in the U.S.
