Watch for Slick Roads; Potential for Snow Sunday Evening

Snow and ice make for hazardous driving

UPDATE: Fairfax County Public Schools will open two hours late this morning due to hazardous road conditions from snow and ice. Fairfax County Public School offices are open.

George Mason University classes will start at 10 a.m.

Federal offices are open, but government workers have the option of taking unscheduled leave or working from home.

“Our next chance for anything other than rain is Sunday night into Monday,” said NWS meteorologist Chris Strong. Strong said the precipitation then will be freezing rain or snow.

Fairfax Connector is operating on its normal schedule today.

A high of 35 degrees is expected today.

For schools, the FCPS website lists the following regulations in the emergency announcement:

  • All morning preschool (special education) and morning double session Family and Early Childhood Education classes are canceled.
  • Afternoon preschool and double session Family and Early Childhood Education classes start on their regular schedule.
  • Full-day preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood classes start two hours later than the regular schedule.
  • Morning (half-day) kindergarten will be dismissed one hour later than the usual time.
  • Afternoon (half-day) kindergarten will begin one hour later than the usual time.
  • Morning field trips are canceled.
  • SACC centers will be open by 8 a.m. when possible.
  • Morning transportation for high school academy classes is canceled.
  • Adult and community education classes will start on time.

Warm, windy, rainy, cold....it seems like we've experienced many types of weather since Friday. And now snow is in the forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area, from 9 p.m. tonight to 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Forecasters are calling for 1-2 inches of snow south of D.C. beginning about midnight tonight and heavier snow, up to 6 inches, in Montgomery County and other areas north of D.C.

The snow is expected to taper off several hours before sunrise. Temperatures should plunge into the 20s after midnight. After sunrise, there could be snow mixed with rain.

Loudoun County is under a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service, which predicts Loudoun will see 4-8 inches of snow.

Tuesday morning, commuters may encounter sleet, snow or ice on the roadways. Show showers will continue Tuesday morning as temperatures rise into the mid-30s. Skies will clear in the afternoon.

As of 7:30 p.m. Monday, Fairfax County Public Schools  had not made any announcements regarding Tuesday’s schedule. FCPS posts weather-related school information on its Web site at www.fcps.edu/news/emerg.htm

On Friday, the temperature at Reagan National Airport peaked at 76 degrees. The temperature at Dulles International Airport reached 74 degrees.
