U.S. Park Police, Horses Visit Union Mill Elementary

Delilah, Sparky pay a visit.

Members of the U.S. Park Police horse mounted unit recently visited Union Mill Elementary in Clifton with their horses, Delilah and Sparky, to talk to first grade students about the police work that they do every day in Washington, D.C.  The students got to meet the horses and took turns petting them and feeding them.

The students got to meet the horses and took turns petting them and feeding them. Officer Gordon demonstrated with Sparky how he rides the horse and the different ways that Sparky walks and trots. 

Officer Gordon and his colleague Officer West explained the work that they do, including crowd and traffic management for parades, demonstrations, and festivals in Washington.

They explained how it is important for the horses to be comfortable with noises and around people, cars, and buses.  Delilah was donated to the Park Police by Union Mill parent David Hill.  Both officers rode Sparky and Delilah in the 2013 presidential inaugural parade.
