South County Sports Roundup

Stallion field hockey, football and volleyball

South County Football (0-2):

First-year head coach Gerry Pannoni’s Stallions are off to an 0-2 start. South County opened the season on September 2 with a 0-7 loss to rival Hayfield (2-0) and dropped their second contest 7-21 at Oakton (2-0) on September 12, in a game rescheduled due to flooding from remnants of Tropical Storm Lee. Highlights of the Oakton loss include a fourth quarter touchdown which came on a 43-yard strike from quarterback Shane Foley to wide receiver Michael Ferguson.

South County travels to West Potomac (1-1) on Friday, September 16 and will look to grab their first win of the season. West Potomac defeated South County 31-15 last season and are coming off of a 49-10 loss to Centreville (2-0).

South County Volleyball (4-3):

The Stallion volleyball team notched an impressive 3-0 home victory over an eight-win Westfield (8-6) team on Monday, September 12. First-year head coach Trista Barnhardt is wasting no time in attempting to match last year’s 18-win season. Her Stallions enjoyed a three game win streak over Madison (4-4), Edison (4-4) and Chantilly (6-2) in Cassel’s Invitational which was held earlier this month in Sterling, Va.

This week the Stallions travel to Hayfield (1-3) on Wednesday, September 14 and host Oakton (6-6) on Monday, September 19.

South County Field Hockey (5-2):

South County’s field hockey team has picked up from where they left off last year and have darted out to a fast start. The team started the season with three straight wins in the Bulldog Tournament earlier this month at Westfield High School, defeating Langley (2-5), Fairfax (4-3) and Woodson (2-4) en route to a spot in the tournament championship game against host Westfield (7-1). The Stallions lost 1-0 to Westfield in a tightly contested game which gave the team their first loss of the season. The team’s second loss came just days later on August 30 at home against McLean (1-1).

Since the McLean loss, the Stallions are on a two-game win streak which boasts a 1-0 win at Chantilly (4-3) and a 1-0 home win against Woodson (2-4). The Stallions host Lake Braddock (6-0) on Friday, September 16 and Lee (0-2) on Wednesday, September 21.

JV Field Hockey (0-1-1):

Stallion Girls JV Field hockey tied McLean 0-0 on August 30 and lost 1-0 to Chantilly on September  2. Their Langley and Woodson games scheduled for September 8 & 15 were cancelled and they host Lake Braddock on Friday, September 16.
