South County Sports: Field Hockey Team Wins Northern Region Championship

Field hockey wins 2011 Northern Region Championship

South County Field Hockey (18-5):

South County defeated Westfield, 4-1, Wednesday evening and captured the 2011 Northern Region title. The win also gives the Stallions an automatic berth in the first-round of the state tournament, which begins next week.  The team looks to avenge its 2009 state semifinal tournament loss.

Meredith Bradsher, Stephanie Halsted, Caroline Karwel and Alexis Schramm all scored goals in Wednesday’s title contest. And, a stingy South County defense limited 19-win Westfield to just one goal. The Stallions breezed through this year’s regional tournament, winning four consecutive games in which they outscored opponents 10-2.

South County played its most complete game of the season last Friday as they dominated Annandale 49-0. The shutout was the team’s first of the year. In a complete transformation from the team’s slow start this season, head coach Gerry Pannoni’s squad clinched a playoff berth and currently owns a six-game win streak.

An uncontainable rushing attack helped give the Stallions 29 first quarter points. Shane Foley, Levaughn Davis and Warner Hunter each rushed for over 90 yards in the contest as the team totaled 414 rushing yards. The defense also scored on a safety.

The team closes out the regular season this Friday at Woodson.

South County Volleyball (21-6):

The Stallions defeated West Potomac 3-0 last week to advance to the Patriot District semifinal game against Lake Braddock, a team the Stallions defeated in late October.

This time however, Lake Braddock snagged the win in a tight 3-2 contest. Despite the loss, South County’s state title hopes remain alive as the team hosts Westfield on Monday, November 7 in the opening round of the regional tournament. The Stallions defeated Westfield 3-0 earlier in the season.

Correction: A previous version of this story stated that South County won the Northern Region Championship. Lake Braddock won the Patriot District Title.
