South County Sports Roundup

Football and volleyball teams are surging

South County Field Hockey (14-4):

South County field hockey peaked at the perfect time. The Stallions are on a five-game win streak and are set to play in the Patriot District tournament championship game Friday, Oct. 21. Despite Friday’s outcome they have already secured an automatic berth in the regional tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Stallions closed the regular season out with a 5-0 win over West Springfield and used that momentum to breeze through their first two Patriot District tournament games. The squad grabbed a 4-0 win over Lee and defeated West Potomac 6-1, as they paved their way to the district championship game.

South County exploded for a season-high 45 points last Friday in its 45-21 victory over Lee. The win was also the team’s fourth consecutive after starting the season 0-3. The National District win over Lee puts the Stallions at 3-1 in district play, and in contention for the Patriot District title, as the season winds down.

The Stallions darted out to a 28-0 second quarter lead before the defense surrendered any points to Lee. The Stallions punted just once on the evening and the rushing attack was efficient as usual, as the team totaled 380 yards rushing. Quarterback Shane Foley broke the century mark en route to a 100 yard evening.

Defensive and special teams play was equally impressive. Jeremy Haynes recorded a safety and Andrew Rector returned at blocked field goal attempt 75 yards for a touchdown.

West Springfield travels to South County this Friday in what looks to be a key game with district title implications.

JV Football (2-2-1):

JV football recorded a 36-0 win over Lee on Saturday, Oct. 15. The team traveled to West Springfield this Wednesday.

The Stallions are one game away from matching last season’s win total of 18. South County hasn’t dropped a match since its Oct. 6 loss to Stone Bridge. The team defeated Annandale 3-1 on the road on Oct. 13 and Lee 3-0 at home Oct 18.

Allison Bruder recorded 18 kills and Dana Robertson tallied 32 digs in the two wins.

South County hosted T.C. Williams on Wednesday, Oct. 20 and travels to Lake Braddock on Monday, Oct. 24.
