A major power outage has temporarily closed the George Mason University campus and canceled all classes until at least noon today, campus officials said.

"All classes and events are cancelled and administrative offices are closed until 12:00 noon Thursday, Sept. 19th on the Fairfax Campus ONLY due to an extended power outage," the university's website indicated. "All sites, centers, and regional campuses (Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William) will operate as scheduled."

For safety reasons, officials said University Police can still be reached by dialing 9-1-1 from any university phone or by calling 703-993-2810 by cell phone or landline.

"If you are in a building impacted by the power failure, exit only if you have emergency lighting available. If the hallways and stairways are completely dark, remain where you are and call for assistance at 703-993-2810," the website reads.

Officials said, if there is anyone who is unable to occupy their classroom or office, or attend their event due to the power outage, and needs temporary shelter, the Johnson Center has power and will remain open until power is restored, though dining options may not available at this time.

Campus officials said an update will be available by 11 a.m.
