Video: 'Spirit Rock' Dedicated at Silverbrook Elementary School

The rock was delivered Thursday afternoon

A 14,000-pound ‘spirit rock’ was delivered to Silverbrook Elementary School Thursday to the chant of 720 students.

“Move that rock! Move that rock,” the students chorused as a crane gently placed the rock in the school’s front garden.

The Lorton-based Vulcan Materials Company donated the granite rock to the school. The organization has donated spirit rocks to dozens of other Fairfax County Schools, including South County Secondary School and Laurel Hill Elementary School.

“We try and do as much as we can in the community,” said Jim Cooper, plant manager at Vulcan.

Principal Melaney Mackin went on a tour of the quarry to choose the rock.

“It was fun learning about the different kinds,” Mackin said. “We will be sending some students there for field trips.”

The school's student government association will be in charge of painting the rock.

“I’m really glad that this will be a part of the history of Silverbrook so that when you guys come back and visit, you will remember the day that the rock was placed here,” Mackin told students.
