Tropical Storm Arthur is expected to reach hurricane strength as it heads for the North Carolina coast later this week as the first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane season.
The National Weather Service forecasts Arthur to stay over water as it passes Virginia and Maryland.
The storm is a reminder to prepare as hurricane season gets underway.

The 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook in May indicated a near-normal or below-normal hurricane season, with 8-13 named storms and up to 6 hurricanes. The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, peaking from August to mid-October.
